Community & Crisis Resources

Emergency Resources

If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, and you feel safe to drive or have a safe mode of transport, you can go to your nearest hospital emergency room.

To call for support, call either 988 or 911. 988 is the specialized, 24/7 National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for mental health, emotional distress, or substance use crises, providing counseling and connecting callers to resources. 911 is for immediate physical safety risks requiring police, fire, or EMS, such as ongoing suicide attempts, serious injury, or crime. If you don’t know which to call, it’s okay. Calling either number will get you connected to the right resources.

If you need to call 911 for a mental health concern in Winston-Salem, ask for the BEAR Team. The BEAR (Behavioral Evaluation and Response) Team is a specially trained unit that responds 24/7 to mental health and substance use emergencies in Winston-Salem.

If you need to call 911 for a mental health concern in Greensboro, ask for the BHRT (Behavioral Health Response Team).

In any area, you can ask the operator if there is a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) available to respond to you. If you are struggling, a mobile crisis team can also come to you.

This service is always free, even if you don’t have insurance, and translators are available for languages other than English.
